Synopsis:

In this week’s segment we talk about the latest iterations of immigration enforcement and their connections to racist public policy, mass incarceration, and the settler colonial foundations of the United States. But we begin talking about Cuba, the intensifying US blockade, and the legacy of Black solidarity in defense of the revolution.

The Republic of Cuba is in the news quite a lot of late and not for good reasons. The U.S. has intensified its more than 60-year-old blockade by preventing the delivery of oil to that country. Venezuela, which was a major supplier, is now under U.S. control, and other nations in the region are under various threats from the US. Obviously, this blockade is creating great suffering as Cuba is unable to reliably provide electricity as a result of US actions. Our guest is Dr. Rosemari Mealy. She is the author of Fidel and Malcolm: Memories of a Meeting, which chronicles the significance of the1960 meeting between Fidel Castro and Malcolm X. She has lived and worked in Cuba and was an international journalist for Radio Habana Cuba. She joins us from New York City to discuss the latest US threat against Cuba and how we should understand it in the context of US/Cuba relations.

The Trump administration is accelerating policies meant not just to deport undocumented people, but to restrict every avenue of legal immigration. Abraham Paulos is the Deputy Director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, BAJI. He joins us from New York City to discuss conditions at detention facilities, restrictions on green card applications and even denaturalization are impacting Black immigrants.
